Answers to the most common questions about Orders Tagger
📊 General Questions
IOSS, B2B, and customs: what does the app actually decide?
Orders Tagger does not determine legal IOSS eligibility, VAT treatment, or customs outcomes. It applies operational tags using a small, fixed ruleset so your team can route fulfilment faster.
- IOSS-related tags (
IOSS_ELIGIBLE,NON_IOSS_SHIPMENT) are based only on shipping to an EU country and order total vs €150 (after EUR conversion). Real IOSS eligibility depends on additional factors (transaction type, goods, registration, platform rules, etc.). - B2B orders are not detected. The app does not read VAT IDs, company fields, or tax-exempt status. A business sale below €150 may still receive
IOSS_ELIGIBLEbecause the rule is purely destination + value. You must override or supplement tags for B2B workflows (e.g. Shopify Flow, manual review, or your customs broker's process). - Tags are not customs declarations and do not guarantee how VAT or duties are collected at checkout or on delivery.
For definitive VAT, IOSS, or customs treatment, use a qualified advisor or broker. Treat tags as warehouse hints, not compliance verdicts.
What does this app do?
Orders Tagger automatically adds tags to your Shopify orders based on predefined rules. Tags are applied instantly when an order is created, based on:
- Order total value (converted to EUR)
- Shipping destination country
- Your shop's base country
- Value thresholds used for operational IOSS/non-IOSS-style labels (see box above)
Who should use this app?
This app is perfect for:
- UK stores shipping to EU: Post-Brexit compliance and customs handling
- Stores using IOSS workflows: Operationally flag many EU-bound orders at or below €150 (not a legal IOSS eligibility check; see IOSS/B2B FAQ above)
- International sellers: Route orders based on destination and value
- High-volume stores: Automate manual order classification
What are the 4 pre-built tagging presets?
1. Customs Clearance Required
When: Shop is in UK (GB) and shipping to any EU country
CUSTOMS_CLEARANCE_REQUIRED2. IOSS Eligible Shipment
When: Shipping to EU and order total ≤ €150
IOSS_ELIGIBLELabel for operational routing only. Not proof of IOSS eligibility; B2B is not excluded (see IOSS/B2B FAQ).
3. Non-IOSS Shipment
When: Shipping to EU and order total > €150
NON_IOSS_SHIPMENTOperational label for EU shipments above the €150 threshold used by the app. It does not replace legal classification (e.g. B2B may differ); duties/VAT depend on your shipment and jurisdiction.
Can I customize the tag names?
YES! You can change tag names in the app's Settings page.
For example, you can change IOSS_ELIGIBLE toIOSS-Ready or any other name you prefer.
Note: The tagging logic (conditions) cannot be changed in MVP. Only the tag names are customizable.
Which currencies are supported?
40+ major currencies supported! Order values are automatically converted to EUR using daily exchange rates to evaluate tagging thresholds (e.g., €150 for IOSS).
Supported currencies:
Major European:
GBP, CHF, NOK, SEK, DKK
Major Global:
USD, CAD, AUD, NZD, JPY, CNY, INR, SGD, HKD
Eastern Europe:
PLN, CZK, HUF, RON, BGN, HRK
Other:
ISK, TRY, RUB, AED, SAR, ZAR, ILS, MXN, BRL, ARS, CLP
Exchange rates are updated daily via exchangerate-api.com. If your store uses a currency not listed above, orders in that currency will NOT be tagged automatically(the app will skip them to avoid incorrect assignments). Please contact support to request support for additional currencies.
💱 Currency & Exchange Rates
How are currency exchange rates handled?
Orders Tagger uses current daily exchange rates from the European Central Bank (ECB), refreshed once per day.
Tags are assigned based on the exchange rate available at the time the order webhook is processedby our system, not necessarily the exact rate at the time the order was created.
📌 Important:
- Exchange rates are cached and refreshed daily
- Tags are assigned for operational classification purposes only
- Not intended for accounting or tax reporting
What if the exchange rate changes between order creation and processing?
This is expected and intentional. Orders Tagger is a classification tool, not a financial calculator.
For the vast majority of orders (processed within seconds to minutes), there is no practical difference. Webhooks are processed almost instantly after order creation.
Why this approach?
- Ensures consistent, reliable tagging
- No dependency on expensive historical rate APIs
- No edge cases for delayed or retried webhooks
- Easy to understand and debug
If you need historical accuracy for tax purposes, please consult with your accountant or tax advisor.
Where can I see which exchange rate was used for each order?
The app logs the exchange rate used for each order in the order_tag_logs table (visible in the app's Dashboard).
This helps with debugging and provides transparency for operational purposes.
Can I use this app for tax or accounting calculations?
NO. This app is designed for operational classification only.
⚠️ IMPORTANT:
Tags are based on current exchange rates and heuristic rules. They are NOT suitable for:
- Tax reporting or VAT calculations
- Customs declarations
- Financial or accounting records
- Legal compliance decisions
Always consult with a qualified tax advisor or customs broker for these purposes.
🔧 Technical Questions
How fast are tags applied?
Tags are applied almost instantly via Shopify webhooks. Typically within 1-5 seconds of order creation.
The app uses the orders/create webhook to detect new orders and apply tags in real-time.
Will tags be applied to existing orders?
NO. The app only tags new orders created after the app is installed.
Existing orders are not retroactively tagged. This is intentional to avoid disrupting your existing order workflows.
Can I enable/disable specific presets?
YES! In the app's Settings page, you can:
- Enable or disable any of the 4 presets
- Customize tag names for active presets
For example, if you don't need IOSS tagging, you can disable that preset.
What data does the app store?
The app stores:
- Shop information: domain, country code, currency
- Preset settings: enabled/disabled status, custom tag names
- Order tag logs: order ID, tags applied, exchange rate used, timestamp
The app does NOT store customer personal data (names, addresses, emails).
